YouTube refines homepage feed, adds highlights option

If your channel subscriptions were starting to get a little unwieldy, you might want to tinker with several new feed options rolling out to the site now. Accompanying bigger thumbnails with more detail, users can now hide individual updates, limit them to new uploads or just unsubscribe directly from their feed. Anything that you've already watched on YouTube is grayed out to avoid unnecessary replays, while a new highlight view should ensure over-zealous videomakers don't squeeze out less prolific contributors -- and make some room for the next wave of (heavily-marketed) YouTube channels.

ChromeLite: experience the ASCII Web of yesteryear

Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here's your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn't really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted -- such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) -- and some fun ASCII art, but that's about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work -- so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools' joke -- and indeed, an annoying 'you can uninstall this!' message appears at the top of every page -- but we're kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

ASRock Vision 3D 252B reviewed: a quiet, top-shelf HTPC worthy of the premium price

Sure, we know there's great temptation to go the DIY route when considering your next HTPC, but if you're looking for a small form factor solution, there are legitimate advantages inherent to prebuilt systems. HotHardware just put the ASRock Vision 3D 252B through a rigorous review, and while it isn't the newest rig on the block, it's said to be worthy of your consideration just the same. At the system's heart, you'll find a Core i5 2520M -- which is from the Sandy Bridge era -- but the diminutive computer is said to provide flawless playback of all media types. Other high points include the system's quiet operation and low power consumption, and in summation, "The component choices, connectivity options, and form factor all hit the sweet spot." While the roughly $900 price may deter some, HotHardware recommends the Vision 3D 252B as a worthwhile HTPC that provides better connectivity options and a smaller size than the DIY alternative.

Add a Windows 8 user tile to your Windows 7 taskbar

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it's only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they've spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there's a user tile displayed. If you'd like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.

How to set up Outlook.com email on your iPhone or iPad

Microsoft has released Outlook.com, what they consider to be the next-generation of email. And much to their credit, Microsoft have gone above and beyond to make sure you can access it not only on the web, but from any and all of your devices, including the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

Here's how.

How to access Outlook.com on your iPhone or iPad via the web

You can login to Outlook.com on your iPhone or iPad, the same as you can login to it on your Windows or Mac PC.

1. Go to http://www.outlook.com
2. Enter your Outlook.com email address and password.
3. And you're in!
4. If you'd rather use the full site than the stripped down mobile site, scroll down and tap on PC Site (why "PC Site" and not "Full Version"? Ask Microsoft!).

If you're on your iPhone, you'll get a warning saying you need to upgrade your browser to a newer version of Safari. Ignore than and tap on Continue. That's just poor interception (since you can't update iPhone Safari the way they imply.)

How to access Outlook.com on your iPhone or iPad via Mail

Better than the website, you can set up the built-in iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad Mail app to get your Outlook.com email.

1. Launch the Settings app from your Home screen.
2. Scroll down and tap on Mail, Contacts, and Calendars.
3. Tap on Add Account.
4. Tap on Hotmail.
5. Enter your Outlook.com email address and password.
6. Select what you want to Sync.

And you're done! You will miss out on any web-specific features, which are what Microsoft is working to make all shiny and revolutionary, but you will get all your mail in the unified inbox, right beside iCloud and Gmail if you use those services as well.

Note: You can also set up Outlook.com as Exchange ActiveSync. Just follow the same steps above but choose the Exchange button and use m.hotmail.com as your server.
