Ben Heck talks about fitting custom 3D printer in briefcase, Q nods in approval (video)

Ben Heck overhauls his custom 3D printer, makes it extra portable video

The last time we ran into Ben Heck, the tinkerer extraordinaire was waxing poetic at Maker Faire about the Raspberry Pi and cheese curds. One more thing he also talked about, however, was his latest 3D printer project, which he now explains in greater detail in the latest episode of the Ben Heck Show. Improvements made to the device include use of a Birdstruder for easier access to the filament and the ability print off an SD card if you don't have a computer handy. The 3D printer also sports an expanded 200-square-millimeter print area with a solid copper cover for added sturdiness and accuracy. As usual, size matters for Mr. Heckendorn so the device got a boost in portability, now neatly folding James Bond-like into a briefcase that measures 18 x 14 x 4.2 inches. Interested in a briefcase printer of your own? Well, Heckendorn mentioned during the Maker Faire interview that he's already working on an improved version and thinking about putting it up on Kickstarter so hope springs eternal. In the meantime, you can glean more details about the device by checking out the video after the break.

In-app payment support arrives on Android

Right on cue, Google has launched in-app payment support for Android applications. Developer testing began last week, and now many popular apps -- like the ones pictured above -- can begin charging users for add-on functionality, content, or whatever the heck else they feel is worthy of additional bits of your pocket change. If you were wondering, Google will take the same 30% cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases.

At last we can buy individual issues in Comics with minimal fuss!

Not Even the Dark Knight Would Use This Insanely Dangerous Knife [Weapons]

Microsoft trumpets Windows Phone 7 numbers on first birthday

windows phone 7
Happy first birthday, Windows Phone 7! One year on, and the fledgling mobile operating system has 36,000 active developers in its AppHub community, 1.5 million downloads of its Developer Tools, and 11,500 apps in its Marketplace.

Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors' app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or "lite" apps, "increasing tonnage" by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.

That's all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds -- and we're still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. We think a few marquee apps would've made a pretty nice first birthday present -- along with a much smoother update process for WP7 users.

LG's 27-inch V720 all-in-one PCs pop up on Flickr, IPS and optional Ivy Bridge in tow

LG allinone PCs make lurid appearance on Flickr with 27inch IPS panel and Intel Ivy Bridge

LG has unveiled the V720, a new series of all-in-one PCs, featuring 27-inch IPS HD panels and an Intel Ivy Bridge processor option. The line consists of a high-end model with Intel's 3rd generation Core i5 and an IPS 1,920 x 1,080 3D panel, and a lesser model with a 2nd generation Core i3 and the same display sans 3D. Other specs include 750GB SATA3 hybrid or standard drives, up to 8GB DDR3 RAM, USB 3.0 and NVIDA's GT640M 1GB graphics. Photos show a white and silver looker with well concealed computer guts, but don't count on being able to pick up one of the minimalist units in the US -- LG normally keeps its PC offerings exclusively in Asia.

Vodafone Australia halts Jelly Bean update, cites regulatory issues

Android Central

Uh oh. Seems all is not sweetness down under, with yesterday's news of an impending Jelly Bean update for the Nexus S from Vodafone Australia, today replaced with the news it has been pulled.

The Aussie carrier has put out a new statement on its blog, which reads something like this:

Important news

We’ve just been advised that due to a software issue, the roll-out the of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to Vodafone Australia customers has been delayed.

It’s been advised the software currently does not meet all the Australian regulatory requirements related to emergency calls.

At this stage, we don’t have any further information on when the roll-out will resume, but as soon as we do, we’ll let you know here on the blog.

We thank you for your understanding and appreciate your patience at this time.

While, understandably, eager Nexus S owners will take this as a bitter blow, regulatory requirements are just that. Requirements. At least Vodafone has been good enough to give their customers an actual, specific reason for the delay.

Of course, this particular issue only applies in Australia. We had heard word from France too that an update for the Nexus S was in-bound, so we'll carry on keeping an eye out. This statement from Vodafone, while frustrating, does at least give a pretty clear indication that such an update does exist. Somewhere.

Verizon announces Q2 2012 financial results, 2.7 million iPhones sold

Verizon announces Q2 2012 financial results, 2.7 million iPhones sold

Verizon has reported their Q2 2012 financial results, and the iPhone accounted for 2.7 million, or roughly 45% of the 5.9 million smartphones Verizon sold. Operating revenues were $28.6 billion, up 3.7% year over year, and wireless service revenues were $15.8 billion, up 7.3% year over year. Verizon chairman and CEO Lowell McAdam said:

Verizon delivered another strong quarter of earnings growth and cash generation, and we remain on track to meet our financial objectives and produce solid double-digit earnings growth for the year. Verizon Wireless has once again demonstrated its industry leadership, combining strong revenue growth with record margins and high customer loyalty. We reported sequential improvement in second-quarter Wireline margins, and we expect to see that improving trend carry through the second half of the year. We also look forward to the closing of strategic transactions and to the integration of process improvements that will set the stage for continued long-term profitable growth across all our business units.

The iPhone remains a huge success for Verizon. Even though both absolute number of units sold, and percentage of smartphones the iPhone accounted for, were down, it's more than halfway through the iPhone 4S product cycle. Given that the 2011 iPhone 4S doesn't have LTE, which is Verizon's clear focus right now, and the focus of many competing handsets, and given Verizon's CDMA network is nowhere near as fast as it is reliable, the iPhone is once again exhibiting remarkable longevity.

Of the remainder of smartphones sold, Verizon said some 2.9 million, were "Droids", but that seems like it must certainly refer to Android phones in general, and not Droid-branded phones in specific, given the popularity of the Samsung and other non-Droid branded lines.

It's interesting that 45% of smartphone buyers on Verizon are opting for a 8 month old iPhone 4S or 24 month old iPhone 4 over far more modern, bigger screened, Android handsets, and that very few are opting for what little BlackBerry and Windows Phone handsets Verizon currently offers.

The expected iPhone 5 launch in October and holiday quarter should, like last year, be much, much stronger for Verizon. During the conference call, they alluded to something special coming round about then, but given the launch of Windows Phone 8, and perhaps new Android, it's pointless to intuit too much into vague statements like those.

Press release, conference call audio, presentation slides, and more are available via the link below.
